I’m frequently contacted by people who have products and services of relevance to my clients. For over 20+ years I have maintained a policy that I do not accept introducers fees or commissions – I simply broadcast and comment on good ideas.
I’m one of those people who has been around long enough to remember previous events that have had the dental community wailing, gnashing their teeth and renting their garments:
- HTM 01-05;
- CQC;
- nGDS;
- GDC FtP;
- NHS ortho tendering (at the moment);
- and this week – I give you GDPR!
Yes – now we have GDPR and the usual period of anxiety as all small business owners wait for guidance on what to do.
I’m already hearing stories from clients who are bemoaning the fact that, in the post Cambridge Analytica (is Mark Zukerberg really a lizard?) world, their patients are opting out of newsletter subscriptions and numbers of social media followers are slowing.
I haven’t come across anyone who is deleting their Facebook account. Instagram and WhatsApp numbers are growing.
We are all accepting that the “statistical behaviour manipulation” that author and speaker Jaron Lanier talks about in his TED presentations is here to stay.
For the uninitiated, Lanier points out that all of that “people who bought/watched/listened to/read this, also bought/watched/listened to/read that“ advice that we get from the likes of Amazon, Netflix and others is really a bunch of algorithms attempting to predict our habits.
So, for the moment, social media and e-commerce are the big bad wolf, until such time as America decides to introduce democracy to another benevolent dictatorship that has oil reserves (watch out al-Assad, the Republicans are coming).
For you and I, it’s just another irritation in a world in which we already haven’t enough time to get things done.
