Excel in Excel – The Spreadsheet of the Week #1

1993 and I’m sat in a training room above The Arndale Centre in Central Manchester, age 40 and surrounded by much younger people.
The training course is Microsoft Excel for beginners. Windows 95 is still in the imagination of Microsoft’s developers.
I have decided to invest in myself and take starter courses for Word, Excel, Access (remember Access?) and Powerpoint. A decision which I now look back on as hugely important.
Ever since, spreadsheets have formed an integral part of my personal and professional financial life.
Over the years, we have developed and distributed many spreadsheets to help our clients understand their finances better.
I thought it would be useful to share with you examples of the spreadsheets we have created and discuss how they are used in dental (and general) business practice.
Over the next few weeks I’m going to share with you a “Spreadsheet of the Week” every Tuesday – and by keeping tabs on the series, you will build a compendium of useful files for you and your team.
(you might want to give your team a heads up to subscribe to this blog)
We start today with the most simple spreadsheet I have used for over 20 years to monitor my own personal expenses on a month by month basis – the personal cash flow spreadsheet.
I create a new one at the start of every calendar year and replace budget with actual expenses every Sunday morning in The Bunker (or soon after if I’m on vacation).
That way, I’m never more then 7 days away from the reality of my personal cash flow.
Which equals peace of mind.
